Synergistic Desert Farming

11/20/2020

Everyone finds the beef raisin’ and beef eatin’ so interesting that we don’t get to talk about our sister company nearly enough. But what CTS Greenwaste does for this family operation isn’t just important, it’s actually pretty cool. The elder sister by nearly a decade, CTS is the backbone of the operation. Landscapers, golf courses, cities and municipalities (which have included Tempe and Cave Creek), organizations with sustainability goals (such as SRP and the Department of Treasury)…. All have brought their organic waste to our site to be composted into mulch.

But the best part?
We aren’t trying to resale it. Retail compost is a saturated market; the world produces a lot more waste than gardens can take in. We return it to the soil. It gets reincorporated into farmland and it works wonders on it. Here are some of the ways our soil amendment improves desert farming:
  • It provides a natural, organic source of micronutrients such as carbon and nitrogen. This offsets the need for synthetic, petro-based fertilizers.
  • It improves crop vitality and revives soil that’s been depleted of these nutrients over time.
  • It increases water retention in the soil. I don’t think I need to explain to anyone why this is important in Arizona!
  • It reduces the carbon footprint of not just our company, but every inch of farmland that utilizes our soil amendment. Between the reduction of synthetics, the carbon sequestration in decomposing green waste, the diversion of waste from landfills, and the redirection of liquid byproducts from a local brewery into a nutrient-rich feed supplement, we recapture enough energy to feed thousands of valley families every year.
Most of the feed our cows consume is grown in the very soil treated with this fully local, in-house compost. And of course, their diet is supplemented by the beer waste produced by local partner Four Peaks Brewery. Our beer-fed beef isn’t just delicious; it comes from this closed-loop sustainable farming system.

We call it synergistic desert farming, and you can only find it from Perry Land & Cattle. Patent pending.
